About ADAA
The Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) is a nonprofit membership organization of the nation's leading galleries in the fine arts. Founded in 1962, ADAA seeks to promote the highest standards of connoisseurship, scholarship and ethical practice within the profession.
ADAA members deal primarily in paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and photographs from the Renaissance to the present day. Each ADAA member is an experienced and knowledgeable dealer in their field. ADAA has approximately 200 member galleries across nearly 40 U.S. cities.
Overview
ADAA Membership
ADAA membership reflects a commitment to professional excellence, ethical practice, scholarship, and support of artists. Member galleries contribute to the cultural life of their communities through exhibitions, publications, research, and long-term artist stewardship.
Membership is open to galleries that meet ADAA's professional standards and is granted through a rigorous application and peer-review process, with approval by the Membership Committee and ADAA Board of Directors. Members are expected to uphold the Association's standards of connoisseurship, scholarship, and ethical practice while contributing to a vibrant and sustainable arts ecosystem.
What do ADAA galleries do?
ADAA member galleries play a vital role in the American cultural landscape. They discover, support, and sustain artists throughout their careers, connect audiences with meaningful artistic experiences, and help preserve our shared cultural heritage.
Through exhibitions, publications, scholarship, and public programming, ADAA galleries introduce new artistic voices, champion historically underrecognized artists, and provide access to significant works by both emerging and established figures. Their work helps shape public understanding of art while fostering relationships between artists, collectors, advisors, museums, scholars, and communities.
Industry leadership and impact
ADAA strengthens the U.S. arts ecosystem through advocacy, philanthropy, research, and industry collaboration. Our work includes:
- Educating policymakers about the role galleries play in supporting artists, preserving cultural heritage, fostering public engagement, and contributing to local economies
- Engaging on legislative, regulatory, tax, and trade issues affecting the fine arts sector
- Supporting museums through ADAA Foundation grants to small and mid-sized institutions, expanding access to exhibitions, collections, and educational programming
- Administering emergency relief for artists, galleries, and arts organizations impacted by disasters and crises
- Contributing industry research and data to inform understanding of the U.S. art market
- Collaborating with artists, museums, scholars, collectors, and peer organizations on shared concerns
- Promoting ethical standards that strengthen public trust and a healthy arts community
Through these efforts, ADAA fosters a vibrant, resilient cultural landscape for artists, museums, galleries, collectors, and the public.

ADAA Foundation
Established in 1970, the ADAA Foundation is the Art Dealers Association of America's affiliated 501(c)(3) organization. Supported primarily through contributions from ADAA members, the Foundation has awarded grants to museums, archives, and arts organizations across the United States to advance art historical research, exhibition development, and public engagement with the visual arts.
Today, the Foundation's grant program supports museums and arts institutions with operating budgets of six million dollars or less, helping fund new exhibitions, educational initiatives, and community engagement programs that expand access to the arts and strengthen cultural scholarship nationwide.

ADAA Relief Fund
Established in 2012 in response to the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, the ADAA Relief Fund provides critical support to galleries and nonprofit arts organizations affected by natural disasters and other unforeseen crises.
Since its inception, the Fund has expanded its reach nationwide, providing grants to arts and culture organizations across the United States and distributing more than $500,000 in relief funding. In 2025, ADAA provided a $100,000 relief grant in support of the Los Angeles Arts Community Fire Relief Fund, administered by the Getty, helping deliver emergency financial assistance to artists and arts workers affected by the Southern California wildfires.
The Relief Fund remains an important part of ADAA's commitment to supporting the resilience and long-term sustainability of the visual arts community.
